ACTIVE HAIR HISTORY

I have always had an active life. I have been dancing since the age of three.
My curiosity of for hair begun at the age of 16.
I was an honor roll student, after school counselor for kids, a dancer at Third Street Music School, and a dancer on my schools dance team. I had the typical teenage problems, braces, acne, and everything. However, I had one problem that no one in my high was dealing with, eczema on my scalp! Eczema is inflammation of the skin, most commonly found in areas such as the arms, wrist, legs, and hands. It is common on my mom side of family. I had it on my arms and legs as a kid, but by high school it had reach up to my scalp. My cousins have eczema, but none of them had it on their scalp.
Being active and sweating all the time did not help my eczema. It would itch and I always gave in to the temptation of scratching it. Scratching would lead to inflammation. I finally received the medication to help deal with my eczema from my doctor. The inflammation eventually would heal, but the scabs would break my hair off. I cried a lot at home. I found relieve in my very uplifting household. You wouldn’t believe this as well. In high school I decided to get a perm. I didn’t have a perm in elementary school, and my mom was completely against me having one. Although she opposed it, she gave in once I became a teenager. We believed a perm would be easier to maintain it as a dancer. We thought the slick back buns would be complementary for a dancer!
Not!!!
The perm made my situation even worse with the eczema and especaily with all of my active commitments. However, I was eventually able to get it under control. During my senior year of high school, I decided to shaved the back of my head. Everyone thought I did it to follow some sort of trend, but truth be told the back area of my head was my most problematic area stricken with the eczema. That area never really grew in properly with the medication, perms and sweating. To get rid of the eczema completely, I had to have the medication fully reach my scalp. It was a blessing that shaving some part of your head was a trend at the time. It lessen my fear of ridicule by my peers; But I was nervous on how I would look with my new haircut. I played it off throughout high school as if I loved it regardless of being nervous the first 2 weeks. I got use to the style and I'm currently still rocking it! OOOWWW lol
My freshman year in college changed my entire life!
My freshman year of college I went away for school and I made the decision to major in chemistry. I wanted to invent a healthy product for women who had the same problem as me. I was still dancing and working, but in a whole other state. One day, I went to a job fair and at one of the tables I met a guy who gave me good advice. I proposed my goals in life to him and his response to me was, “Truthfully, it sounds like you want to be a business woman. I think you need to study business as your major and minor in chemistry or environmental science. That way you can run your own business. You will create and know the cause of effect of the copy. But still know what is in your product.” That had to be one of the best advice I had ever gotten. It was at that point, I knew what I wanted to do. That same year my sorority sister told me she had something to tell me. When we met up one day she was a change woman. She had shaved all of her hair off and decided to go natural. She wanted to start from scratch and learn how to treat her hair better. To me she had so much confidence. I know we are the same age, but that moment in life I looked up to her.
The summer after my freshman year I transferred to a school back home to pursue my dance career. I changed my major to business. The summer after my sophomore year in college, I went natural. I was completely inspired by my beautiful sorority sister.
I never did the big chop. I just transition by growing out my natural hair, and cutting the permed hair every couple of months. Now, I am fully natural. I get asked all the time how do maintain my natural hair because I am so active. I am a professional dancer, a step teacher for Art Of Stepping,, and a hip hop teacher at Breaking Boundaries, and company dancer for Art Of Leghon.
I will be honest it is hard. Especially when you work a lot. Between shows, rehearsals, taking classes, and teaching classes, I found it hard at times. But on a journey I learned more about me and my hair. The purpose of this blog is for me to share any hair tips for active people.
Please enjoy and I hope you love it. I love passing a long the help and advice.
